Nairobi City county government on Thursday evicted tenants from its houses in Eastlands for non-payment of rent.
The tenants of 9,307 units owe City Hall a total of Sh60 million in rent arrears.

The evictions started in the morning and took place in Jerusalem, Maringo, Bahati, Kaloleni, Hamza and Jericho estates.

Head of revenue collection in Makadara subcounty Mr Joseph Mwaniki said that the operation will be carried out weekly and will extend to bars and market stalls in Uhuru market and Jericho market.

During the operation, the askaris impounded household items which will be released after the owners pay their arrears.
Tenants occupying City Hall houses are supposed to pay the rent every fifth day of the month.
